Choose Clean/Renewable Energy
Do at Home
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option.
Energy
Support Companies Leading in Green Energy
I will use my spending power to reward companies leading in creating or purchasing green energy and incentivize others to invest more in green energy.
Energy
Learn More about Wave and Tidal Energy
I will spend at least 2 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of wave and tidal energy.

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationReducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?
Anne Makhoul 11/18/2021 6:20 AMThe ideal solution would be greater use of mass public transit and virtu-car-type options, but Covid has severely impact mass transit revenues and the suburbs have few car borrowing options. Zero emissions vehicles need lithium batteries which are also heavy polluters and rely on electricity which has to be generated from nuclear, hydro or fossil fuel-driven sources. Switching everyone from internal combustion to electric engines - my next step is to research whether there are full accountings of the impact of both options. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyAfter you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?
Anne Makhoul 11/08/2021 5:13 AMGetting my carbon footprint to fall beneath $52.37/month (3.43 tons of CO2 per month!) will require a switch to renewable energy sources, so that's the next thing to research - is there a supplier, what's involved in the switch, and can prices be locked in for 3-5 years to balance out anticipated energy cost increases/inflationary pressures? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteIn what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?
Anne Makhoul 11/05/2021 10:52 AMTrail Road landfill is near the intersection of Barnsdale Road and the 416. The Carp landfill seems to continue to take household items, though the company that manages it says that is now closed. Website information is confusing/unclear! All I know is that I played outdoor soccer at the OZ Dome this summer (near Carp) and the stench from the nearby landfill was pretty nauseating when the wind was blowing in our direction. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Anne Makhoul 11/05/2021 10:42 AMBest before - means highest quality of product, but isn't aligned to food safety standards. None of the 3 dates are particularly helpful. Best bet: be guided by the dates, but make sure you inspect your food - for good or bad smells and appearances. Not sure if these help when using medical or supplement products! -
Anne Makhoul 11/03/2021 4:58 AMI think this competition is brilliant, creative and brings an element of fun to our current situation.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Anne Makhoul 11/03/2021 4:57 AMKeep a clean reusable mug in my car.-
Beth Dekoker 11/03/2021 6:23 AMHabits are hard things to break, but being consistent and having support and someone to remind you around helps. Being accountable at the end of the day by saying, I did it! is a great start for tomorrow.
